thoughts and observations on the daily readings
The prophet Hosea understood the central importance God's faithful love for us and the prophet mourned the infidelity of the people in their response. In his prophecy, he uses the image of an unfaithful spouse to both challenge the people to return and to remind them of the Lord's enduring care for them. Jesus' own prophetic words taken today from the Gospel of Matthew proclaim this same truth that love is no mere feeling, it can never be partial or passing, love engages the whole of us. And the love among people lives on the ground of Divine Love - a faithful. compassionate, life-giving love. Thanks be to God that He has given to His Church the gift of faithful couples who live that mystery in the sacrament of marriage. And thanks be to God that He invites all of us every day to live that love for others. The Lord is with us. The Lord loves us. The Lord will never abandon us. His love endures forever.

Happy Feast of St. Joseph! It has always struck me that this Feast is another kind of Father's Day. After all, when Jesus addresses God in the gospels, He calls the Father "Abba" - the same term that He would have used in addressing His adoptive father, Joseph. What better testimony to the goodness and love of Joseph than that testimony from his beloved Jesus. On this year's feast, so many of us around the world feel so very vulnerable and we look to St. Joseph for reassurance, strength, and consolation. "O Saint Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss his fine head for me and ask him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath." It has been a long time since this site has been utilized but on this Solemnity of St. Joseph 2020 we find ourselves in the most extraordinary of circumstances. And so I will be using this blog and website as well as face book and YouTube to comment on the Holy Word of God and offer resources for prayer and reflection. A blessed St. Joseph Day to you and may the Divine Physician guard you and grant you good health! St. Joseph, pray for us!
